The Policy and Research Initiative (PRI) is a registered society (Reg. No. MPM/CA/204/2025) based in Malappuram, Kerala. This policy explains what personal information priresearch.in collects, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. We collect as little as we need and we do not sell personal information.
What we collect
- When you contact us: your name, email address, the type of enquiry and your message.
- When you apply for a fellowship, internship or job: your name, email address, the role you apply for, and the CV, cover letter and (where you send one) writing sample you upload.
- When you create an account (needed to download datasets): your name, email address and password, your organisation if you give it, what you will use the data for, and whether you want our updates by email. We store your password only in a scrambled form that cannot be read back. If you continue with Google instead, Google tells us your name and your email address (which Google has confirmed), and the account has no password with us.
- When you use your account: a record that you confirmed your email address, which datasets you download (and in which format, and when), the datasets you request access to, and the decisions on those requests. PRI staff accounts are created by PRI.
- Technical information: like every website, our servers briefly see your IP address and browser details when you visit. We use the IP address of form submissions only to limit spam, and we do not build profiles from it.
- How the site is used: we use Google Analytics to count visits to our public pages: which pages are viewed, how visitors arrived (for example from a search engine or a link), and their approximate location, device and browser. It does not record your name, your email address or what you type into forms, and it does not report visits to the sign-in, account or staff pages.
We do not use advertising tools, and we do not track you across other websites.
How we use it
- To reply to your message and to keep a record of the conversation.
- To assess your application and contact you about it.
- To let you sign in and download datasets, to confirm your email address, and to decide and record requests for restricted datasets.
- To understand which pages and research are read most and how people find them, so we can improve the site.
- To understand who uses PRI's data and which datasets are most useful (for example, how many downloads are for research or journalism), so we can improve it.
- To send you updates about PRI's research and data, only if you ask for them; you can stop them at any time from your account page.
- To keep the website secure and working, for example by limiting repeated sign-in attempts and spam.
Cookies and storage in your browser
We use what the site needs to work, and cookies that let us count visits:
- Sign-in cookies (pri_access and pri_refresh), set only when you sign in. They are not readable by scripts on the page and are removed when you sign out.
- Local storage in your browser, used to remember your signed-in name and role on this device, the datasets you have requested, and display preferences such as a collapsed menu. It stays on your device.
- Google Analytics cookies (_ga and one beginning _ga_), which tell visits from the same browser apart so that we can count visitors. They hold a random identifier, not your name or email address, and last up to two years. You can block or delete them in your browser's settings, or install Google's opt-out add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout), and the site works the same without them.
There are no advertising cookies. The map on our Contact page is provided by Google Maps, and the "Continue with Google" button on the sign-in page by Google; each may set its own cookies when it loads.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only with services that help us run the site, and only as far as needed:
- Amazon Web Services hosts the website, its database and uploaded files, in its Mumbai (India) region.
- Our email provider delivers contact messages and account emails (such as confirmation and password links) to their recipients.
- Google Analytics receives the page views and visit details described above, to count and report on visits.
- Google Maps shows our office location on the Contact page.
- Google sign-in, if you choose it, confirms who you are; Google then knows you signed in to this site.
- Donations are made on Razorpay's payment page, through your UPI app or by bank transfer. These happen outside this website, and we never see your card or bank details.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Contact messages and applications are kept for as long as they are useful to answer you or to consider you for a role, and are then deleted.
- Account information is kept while your account is active. Accounts are deactivated, not deleted, so that past decisions remain on record; you can ask us to delete yours at any time.
- Database backups are kept for 30 days.
Your rights
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you,
- correct or update it,
- delete it, where we are not required to keep it,
- and you can withdraw consent you have given, for example to keep an application on file.
To make a request or raise a concern, write to contact@priresearch.in. We will reply within 30 days.
Security
Information travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Uploaded applications are stored privately and opened only by authorised PRI staff, through links that expire. Access to our dashboard is limited by role.
Children
This website is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update it on this page and change the date above.
