Dataset · Education
Number of universities in each state and union territory of India by type (central, state public, state private, deemed, institutions under state legislature and other) as listed by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, and the subset included under Section 12B (eligible for central assistance; older reports instead give those 'not fit for central assistance'), from the state-wise university tables of the UGC Annual Reports 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2014-15 to 2023-24. Each row is one state (or the India total), report year, listing and university type, with the printed column heading, table title and page. India had 1,153 universities under Section 2(f) in the 2023-24 report (493 in 2009-10); Kerala had 19 (1 central, 3 deemed, 15 state public). Use it to compare university provision across states over time.
